University Initiatives

The Provost’s Office of University Initiatives works with faculty and staff to champion and sustain visionary initiatives which benefit the campus as well as the greater San Joaquin Valley region.  The Office supports the development of external funding proposals, growing academic programs, and innovative enterprises.   Working with teams of faculty and staff, the Office supports the implementation of key efforts such as producing the Fresno State “Impact of the Drought” report, supporting WASC accreditation, and securing over $13 million in external funding awards. Award highlights include the following:

  1. U.S. Department of Education’s Title V, A – “Enseñamos en el Valle Central” award to prepare teachers who can serve students in bilingual classrooms in the Central Valley.
  2. U.S. Department of Education’s “U.S. History and Civics Academies” to implement professional development opportunities for Fresno Unified School District teachers and inspiring summer experiences for their students.
  3. National Science Foundation’s “S-STEM” to provide scholarships to low-income students with academic promise who are math majors and to design a pre-research environment for lower division math courses.
  4. U.S. Department of Education’s Title V, B – “Promoting Postbaccaulaurete Opportunities for Hispanic Americans” award to found a “Blue Ribbon Online Campus” (see “The Graduate Net”).
  5. Association of Public and Land-Grant University’s Transformational Planning Grant to found the “Central Valley Promise,” a coalition of 10 Hispanic-serving Institutions dedicated to strengthening the region’s K-16 pipeline through their shared technology initiatives.
  6. Two companion grants—“Action Research” and “Campus Data Readiness”—from the CSU Chancellor’s Office to strengthen the academic success of Southeast Asian American students.
  7. “E-Mobility” grants from the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District to expand online test tasking and Citrix application streaming to reduce car travel to and from campus.
  8. Educause “Integrated Planning and Advising Services” grant to implement state-of-the-art technology tools that enable students to effectively plan their college careers.
  9. Multiple awards to build the Barstow Avenue commuter bikeways.
  10. California Energy Commission award to install the EV Charging Station on campus, the first major EV Charging station in the region.
