Elizabeth Sofia Powell earned Bachelors and Masters degrees in English Literature from California State University, Fresno, and a Juris Doctorate from San Joaquin College of Law. She started teaching in the First-Year Writing program at Fresno State in 1987, and then she decided law school sounded interesting. While Elizabeth loved studying law, she hated practicing it, so after two years in private practice, she "came back from the dark side" (as Prof. Connie Hales put it) and resumed teaching composition as Lecturer at Fresno State.
Although she has taught upper-division composition and introduction to literature courses, she most enjoys working with freshmen and helping them build the reading and writing skills that they will need for a successful college career.
On her own time, Elizabeth's research focuses on children's literature, particularly the works of Astrid Lindgren. She owns a copy of everything Lindgren wrote, in Swedish or English, and quite a few in both. Powell's first translation of a Lindgren work into English will be published in 2017.
