Early Start Placement

NOTE: Information on this page is subject to change as the 2019 Early Start program is designed. Check back on April 17th for updates.

Incoming freshmen will be placed in one of four categories for English and Mathematics readiness. If you have declared a STEM major, you will have different criteria for mathematics. The categories determine your placement statuses for the Early Start program and GE English/Math courses.

English

The Bulldog English Readiness standards apply to all incoming freshmen. You must meet at least one criteria in the "Fulfilled" or "Ready" categories to be exempt from Early Start English.

GE English Requirement Fulfilled (W1)

GE requirements in English fulfilled. Exempt from Early Start English. 

You must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Pass AP Composition/Language Exam with a 3 or higher
  • Pass AP Composition/Literature Exam with a 3 or higher
  • Pass approved community college course with a C- or better

Ready for GE English (W2)

Ready to take a General Education (GE) English course. Exempt from Early Start English. 

You must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Score "Standard Exceeded" on EAP/CAASP/SBAC
  • Score "Standard Met" on EAP/CAASP/SBAC AND pass Senior Experience (more info)
  • SAT: 550 and above
  • ACT: 22 and above
  • Weighted HS GPA: 3.3 and above
  • Weighted HS GPA: 3.0 - 3.29 AND pass Senior  Experience (more info)
  • Complete an approved "Remedial Course" at a California Community College (click here for a full list)

Ready for Supported GE English (W3); Early Start Recommended

Ready to take a supported General Education (GE) English course. Supported courses include a co-requisite class that provides additional academic support. 

Early Start is recommended, but not required. Early Start registration will be available on June 12th.

You must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • SAT: 510-540
  • ACT: 19-21
  • Weighted HS GPA: 3.0-3.29 AND 4 years of English

Ready for Supported GE English (W4); Early Start Required

Ready to take a supported General Education (GE) English course. Supported courses include a co-requisite class that provides additional academic support.

Early Start is recommended, but not required. Early Start registration will be available on May 8th.

Criteria for this category:

  • "Score "Not Yet Ready" or "Not Ready" on EAP/CAASP/SBAC
  • New SAT: below 510
  • ACT: below 19

Math (non-STEM)

The Bulldog Math Readiness (non-STEM) standards apply to incoming freshmen who have not declared STEM majors. You must meet at least one criteria in the "Fulfilled" or "Ready" categories to be exempt from Early Start Math.

  • Weighted HS Math GPA: 3.0+ AND 5+ years of Math
  • Complete an approved "Remedial Course" at a California Community College (click here for a full list)

Ready: With Support

Ready for GE Math with support

  • Weighted HS GPA: 3.0+
  • Weighted HS Math GPA: 3.3+

Ready: With Support, Early Start Program Required

Ready for GE Math with support

Early Start Math is required; registration opens May 8

  • Score "Not Yet Ready" or "Not Ready" on EAP/CAASP/SBAC
  • Weighted HS GPA: below 3.0
  • Weighted HS Math GPA: below 3.3

*The IB exam and CLEP program will not fulfill CSU General Education B4 at Fresno State.

Senior Experience

You may see a message on the Early Start page stating, "You need to complete your English/Math Senior Experience. If not completed you will need to enroll in Early Start." 

If you see this message, you are taking an approved "Senior Experience" high school course. You will be placed in the "Ready" category for English/Math if you pass their course with a "C" or better and submit a Conditional Readiness Form (2019 form pending)

WARNING: Forms MUST be signed by the teacher/counselor, so you should get them signed before your high school closes for the summer.
