Overview of CSU-LSAMP Fresno State

The LSAMP program supports comprehensive attention to those processes and factors that promote baccalaureate attainment, preparation for graduate study, and preparation for successful careers by students within alliances.

Undergraduate LSAMP program activities include:

Academic and Career Advisement

The purpose of LSAMP is to assist current or prospective Fresno State students in the academic path to achieve their goals through advising and the locating of a STEM advisor on campus.

advising

It is required that all program students meet with their faculty advisor at least once per academic year and complete the Faculty Academic Advising Form, but it is HIGHLY recommended that you meet your advisor each semester. Submit your advising verification form to the LSAMP office once you and your advisor have signed it.

Peer Mentoring

Peer mentors are an important component of LSAMP. Peer mentors implement retention activities, assist with career and educational planning, and coordinate with the program coordinator to implement peer mentoring for first year students.

It is also important to acknowledge that peer mentors are one of the primary LSAMP representatives responsible for interacting with students and for assisting students in dealing with the transition to the university.

Academic Excellence Workshops

Academic excellence workshops are regularly held, weekly meetings (2 to 4 hours) to support excellence in foundation courses in mathematics, chemistry, physics, engineering, or other technical subjects. Participants engage in structured activities that develop communications skills of students, their ability to work with others, and their mastery of the content.

Participants develop the bonds that create an academic community among the participants and create self-directed learners.

The AEWs are traditionally led by an upper division student who is referred to as the Facilitator and is who is proficient in the subject matter.

Schedule and attendance

  • The AEWs are held once per week for 2 hours and can be taken for 1 unit – credit/no-credit grading as N. Sci. 40T courses
  • Student participants must attend at least 60% of the AEW in order to receive credit. Students must sign in in order to receive credit for participation.

Through grade comparisons it has been shown that students who attend the AEWs will generally perform better in the corresponding course.

Student Meetings

LSAMP student meetings are held once per semester. The meetings provide a forum for students to network and gather information pertaining to research, conferences, campus activities and other opportunities.

Research Program

stdresearch

LSAMP students have the opportunity to participate in undergraduate research with a Fresno State faculty member

Participants historically have received Research Trainee payment up to $1,500  for participating during the summer and an additional $1,500  during the academic year component.

Contact Lilia De La Cerda for application and details.

Previous students have shared the following:

  • "It was a great experience and I wish every student could participate."
  • "This opportunity has helped to open my eyes to the world of scientific research and the possibilities that present themselves once an answer to a question is sought."

GRE Preparation

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and critical thinking and analytical writing skills that have been acquired over a long period of time and that are not related to any specific field of study. The GRE Subject Tests gauge undergraduate achievement in 8 specific fields of study and is often required for admission into graduate degree programs.

Make sure to contact the Financial Aid Office for information regarding the Fee Reduction Program
