Professor Benavides is the Past Director of the Instructional Technology and Resource Center for the Kremen School of Education and Human Development and the NASA Educator Resource Center. He is an Emeritus faculty in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, Past University Senator and Senator at the Academic Senate of the California State University - ASCSU. Otto was the chair of the Academic Information Technology Committee and a member of various campus committees. Otto was an Assistant Professor at the College of Education at The University of Memphis where he was the Coordinator for the College of Education Media Center and responsible for technology planning and implementation. He also taught audiovisual, instructional design and other instructional technology courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. Otto Benavides worked at Shelby State Community College in Memphis, Tennessee. He was Assistant Director for the Instructional Media Center. He assisted faculty in several academic departments and in particular Allied Health fields with course and clinical space design. He also taught TV Production and audiovisual courses. He was International Student Advisor and representative to the Community College International Consortium.
Otto received a Community Service Award in Human Relation Efforts from the National Conference of Christians and Jews in 1988. He is Past President of the Memphis Council for International Visitors. He was accepted as an Apple Distinguished Educator in 1999. In April 2000 he was honored as a Laureate by the Smithsonian Institution Computerworld Award Program. He was Adobe Education Leader in 2009. Otto served as Chairman of the Steering Committee of the International Student Media Festival (ISMF). He was a Board Member of the AECT - ECT Foundation. Professor Benavides is Past President of ICEM - International Council for Educational Media. Specialties: technology integration, video production, technology planning, international communications and networking.
