Doctorate in Educational Leadership

Doctorate in Educational Leadership (Ed.D.)

Preparing administrators to meet the educational challenges of today and the future.

Fresno State’s doctoral program in educational leadership supports the CSU system-wide effort to offer professional practice doctoral programs in Educational Leadership. Fresno State’s program is designed to support working professionals poised for leadership in P12 schools and districts or community colleges. The 60-unit program of study can be completed in three years of full-time study and leads candidates to earn a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree. Our cohort-based doctoral program offers two delivery format options for students: Face-to-Face and Online. Both delivery format option enables students to focus on either P12 Educational Leadership or Community College/Higher Education Leadership.

Our program prepares its students to develop new skills that will enable them to:

  • Acquire theoretical, practical, methodological and empirical knowledge
  • Conduct field-based research
  • Serve the needs of an increasingly diverse student population
  • Establish sound educational policy and practice
  • Play a leadership role in educational reform
  • Conduct educational assessments and evaluations

Delivery Formats

Students opting for the face-to-face delivery format take classes in the late afternoon, evenings, and weekends on the Fresno State campus. The face-to-face cohort model connects students in learning environments with each other and faculty members advancing research on the practice of educational leadership.

Students opting for the online delivery format will participate in a virtual campus experience of interactive classes delivered online. Courses will be offered using the Canvas learning management system. The courses will use a balance of synchronous and asynchronous tools available in Canvas, in addition to email, video conference, teleconference, and other technology as appropriate (e.g., Zoom, Google Hangout, GoogleDocs). Because our program views interpersonal interactions as a crucial leadership skill, students will have opportunities to meet with their cohort members and program faculty during the required summer residencies at Fresno State.

All Fresno State educational leadership doctoral students have full access to a wide range of support services to enhance their engagement, well-being, and academic success.

The Fresno State Doctoral Program is a participant in the prestigious national study of Education Doctorates by the Carnegie Foundation.
