Congratulations graduate!  Commencement season is near and it promises to be a memorable experience for you, your family and friends.

We have compiled a list of frequently asked questions to help guide you through the process of preparing for Commencement season —everything from ordering your regalia to making sure your family and friends see your proud moment.

QUESTIONS FOR GRADUATES - Before Commencement 

What is the deadline to sign up for graduation?

How do I know if I am eligible to graduate?

If you have not yet done so, check with your academic advisor to make sure you have met all of the requirements to graduate. What graduate names are reflected in the University Commencement Program?

Summer 2018, Fall 2018 graduates, and Spring 2019 graduates who submitted their Graduation application by the deadline date are included in the 2019 Commencement Program. Your Primary Name Type or Diploma Name Type as indicated in "Personal Information" section of your Student Center will be printed in the program.

While I have not applied to graduate, I would still like to have my name printed in the University Commencement program. What is the process?

If you will not be completing your graduation requirements for Spring 2019 but still want your name to appear in the Commencement program, contact the Undergraduate Degree Evaluations Office in Joyal Administration Building, Room 115 or visit the Undergraduate Degree Evaluations Office contact page at http://fresnostate.edu/studentaffairs/registrar/contact-us/index.html for more information.

How do I arrange for special accommodations for various ceremonies?

For graduates requesting accommodations, contact Student Involvement at 559.278.2741 or email commencement@csufresno.edu for assistance.

What attire is recommended for graduation ceremonies? Where can I purchase regalia?

Can I decorate my cap?

Yes. When decorating your cap, be mindful of the following: Information/message on your cap will viewed by fellow graduates, families and guests of all ages; ensure that your decor does not obstruct the view for others; make sure items are secure and not falling off, including excessive glitter.

Where do I get honor cords and related honor regalia?

Contact your specific honors office/department for additional information regarding regalia details.

I've heard about a Grad Box that has Alumni gear and academic regalia. Where do I go for more information and how to order?

Do graduates need tickets?

For University Commencement, tickets are not required for graduates or guests. Check with your ceremony coordinator for specific graduation participation requirements.

QUESTIONS FOR GRADUATES - Day of Commencement

Where are graduation ceremonies held?

University Commencement and College/School graduation ceremonies are held in the Save Mart Center, 2650 E Shaw Ave, Fresno, CA.

What time should I arrive?

Unless otherwise noted by the ceremony coordinator, graduates should plan to arrive 60 minutes prior to their ceremony in the Save Mart Center. Please consider travel time, traffic, parking and security screening at the arena, and plan accordingly.

How does the Student Code of Conduct apply to graduation ceremonies?

Students participating in graduation ceremonies must comply with the Student Conduct Code.

We ask for your help in making graduation ceremonies a positive experience for everyone. Misconduct by even a few would be disturbing to the graduates, faculty, and guests who expect and deserve a safe, orderly, and dignified ceremony.

All Fresno State Commencement and graduation ceremonies are alcohol, drug, smoke, vapor and tobacco-free events and a zero-tolerance for disorderly behavior will be strictly enforced. Graduates and guests will not be permitted to carry alcoholic beverages into ceremony sites or consume them there.

Graduates and guests who are intoxicated or disruptive will not be allowed in the ceremony venue or will be escorted from the ceremony.

What should I bring?

Arrive at the loading dock entrance with graduation gown in hand. Once admitted to the line-up area you will put on your gown. Proper attire is required to participate. We encourage you wear comfortable shoes, as you will walk down the Save Mart Center loading dock ramp to the assembly area.

Leave all personal belongings (purses, bags, backpacks) with guests.

No open beverages or containers are allowed in the assembly area; water is available throughout the assembly area. Be aware of Save Mart Center's prohibited items.

Bag inspection and electronic wanding will be in effect at all Save Mart Center points of entry.

Where can I leave my coat, handbag or other personal belongings?

Please leave all personal belongings with family members or friends. There are no provisions in the assembly area for coats, handbags or other valuable personal items.

Which side of my cap does the tassel go on?

Masters and doctoral degree candidates place the tassel on the left side of the cap. Bachelor's degree candidates wear the tassel on the right side of the cap until after the conferring of the degrees.

I've misplaced items for my regalia. Where can I go for last-minute items?

Where can I get a Commencement program?

Commencement program booklets are available at the University Commencement ceremony held Saturday May 18 at 1:30pm. The University prints a limited number of Commencement programs for guests.

Will my name be read out loud out the various Save Mart Center Ceremonies?

The College/School ceremonies, African American Recognition Program and the Chicano/Latino Commencement Celebration have components within their ceremony where they recognize individual students.

The University Commencement Ceremony recognize Dean's Medalists and Doctoral students on stage.

Will photos or videos be taken?

A professional photographer from GradImages will take your photograph at your School/College ceremony and at University Commencement. To order photographs, visit the GradImages website. Guests are permitted to take photographs and video from the stands, but not on the floor.

Please note: Graduates and Commencement audiences should be aware that University Commencement will be live-streamed and recorded. There will also be a video clip and photography of each graduate crossing the stage. In addition, University staff and official photographers may be roaming around during your graduation day capturing pictures and video clips for the University's social media channels, website and printed materials.

Will there be ASL interpreters at the ceremonies?

Yes. ASL interpreters will be present. Contact Student Involvement at commencement@csufresno.edu or call 559-278-2741 to coordinate ASL interpreting needs.

When will I receive my diploma?

Allow three to four months for the completion of a degree evaluation, after which time diplomas will be mailed to the address we have on file.

What entrances should guests use?

Do guests need tickets and parking passes?

A: For all graduation ceremonies during Commencement weekend parking passes are not required. While tickets are not required Save Mart Center ceremonies, note that seating is on a first come first served basis and saving large quantities of seats is not allowed.

How do I arrange special accommodations for guests needing accessible seating?

Will there be ASL interpreters at the ceremonies?

Seating in the first row of Section 111 is reserved for guests with hearing accessibility needs. A sign language interpreter will be located in this area. Headsets and receivers for Save Mart Center's FM hearing assistance system are available, at no charge, at the Guest Services Desk in the NW corner of the Main Concourse.

What time should guests arrive for ceremonies held in the Save Mart Center?

It is strongly recommended that family members and guests should be seated a minimum of 30 minutes prior to the start of the ceremony.

Where I can I purchase flowers for graduates?

Flower bouquets and fresh leis will be for sale at merchandise sites throughout Save Mart Center.

Do you sell DVD copies of the University Commencement ceremony?

No, but 2 weeks after the ceremony, you will be able to view the ceremony through a link on the Commencement website at http://www.fresnostate.edu/commencement.

What is the policy regarding service animals?

Where do guests meet graduates after the ceremony?

After the ceremony, guest and graduates can meet outside. Guests are not permitted on the arena floor.

Can guests take photos?

Guests are permitted to take photographs and video from the stands only. They are not allowed on the main floor. Please note: University staff members will also be photographing the event. Photos and video taken by staff are for University use and are not intended to be sold or given to graduates or family members.

What can guests bring to the ceremony?

For safety and security reasons, please inform your guests of Save Mart Center's prohibited items. All patrons attending Save Mart Center ceremonies will be wanded by security in addition to bag checks.

Flowers bouquets and fresh leis will be for sale at merchandise sites throughout the arena.
Alumni gear will also be available for sale in the atrium or at the Kennel Bookstore.

Signage no larger than 2'x3' is permitted, however, any signage that will obstruct the view of other ceremony guests for an extended period of time may be subject to removal by venue management.

No outside food/beverages are allowed into the arena. Baby food is permitted. Note that Save Mart Center concession stands will be open for water and soft drink purchases only.
