Assistive Technology

Assistive Technology (AT) is any item, piece of equipment, software program, or product system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of persons with disabilities. Assistive Technology may aid people who have difficulty speaking, typing, writing, remembering, pointing, seeing, hearing, learning, walking, and many other things. Different disabilities require different assistive technologies.

Assistive Technology used at SSD includes:

  • Speech-To-Text Software

  • Text-to-Speech Software

  • Voice Recognition Software

  • Magnification Lenses and CCTV’s Hardware

  • Adaptive Keyboards and Mice

  • Other computer inputs/outputs

Assistive Technology equipment is available based on a referral from the Disability Management Specialist and the Assistive Technology Coordinator. If you think Assistive Technology may help you, please schedule a meeting with the Assistive Technology Coordinator to discuss your needs. Hardware and Software orientations will be provided after an assessment has been completed by the Assistive Technology Coordinator.
