Sustainability at Fresno State

At Fresno State, we define sustainability in a holistic and inclusive way...

“encompassing human and ecological health, social justice, secure livelihoods, and a better world for all generations.”

– Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE)

72% Nearly 72% of academic departments on campus offer at least one sustainability-focused course to students.
66% Campus greenhouse gas emissions have been reduced by nearly 66% since 1990.
24% Overall campus water use has decreased by 24% in the last decade.

We understand the important role higher education plays in addressing and solving sustainability issues, which is why our university is committed not only to making our physical campus more sustainable but also developing generations of future leaders who understand and prioritize sustainability in their lives and careers.

Our first step in making our campus more sustainable involves collecting and analyzing data to identify areas in which we can improve. We do this using AASHE's Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System (STARS). Fresno State received a Silver rating from AASHE STARS for our university's performance in campus sustainability. Learn more about this certification by looking through our most recent AASHE STARS report
