Fresno State's Department of English supports the largest number of employees within the College of Arts and Humanities. More than 100 people work with us every day to serve the students in our degree programs and to produce professional publications and events.

This includes: professors, lecturers, administrative and technical staff, graduate teaching associates (TAs), instructional student assistants (tutors), student assistants, and interns.

Description: The Writing Center specializes in tutoring writing based on current methods and best practices. Tutors work with students in small groups and individually to help student writers develop their writing skills and to provide supportive community. Once hired, tutors will receive training and continue learning new tutoring methods in a required class that meets every week.

First-Year Writing

Description: Assistant to the Director of Composition duties will include simple to complex assignments that support the First-Year Writing program. This will include: help with program assessment, gathering sample portfolios, acquiring and analyzing data, making surveys, putting together reports, etc.; help to organize a summer program assessment reading (if needed); help with development of resources for the program, developing new chapters in the sourcebook, developing short videos on key topics, and finding web links that support the template curriculum; maintain our WTCC google folder, making sure our docs are accessible to the instructors in the program; serve as a liaison between the program and relevant University stakeholders.

The Normal School

Description: Editorial Assistant duties will include simple to complex assignments that support The Normal School literary magazine, the Philip Levine Prize for Poetry book contest, and the day-to-day operations of the MFA program. For the Normal School, this will include: drafting website pages and posts for upcoming content, in coordination with the editorial calendar; identifying and processing photos and art; proofreading content; managing and reading incoming submissions; managing email newsletter and subscriptions; producing communications materials for projects in marketing and promotions; producing special issues as needed; and other duties as assigned. For the Levine Prize and the MFA program, this will include: staffing at virtual, hybrid, and/or in-person events (may include evenings or weekends); events planning and programming; providing video production, research, and closed captioning work on YouTube videos; supporting office staff with communications, data entry, database management, and administrative help.

Levine Prize

Description: Editorial Assistant duties will include simple to complex tasks that support the Philip Levine Prize for Poetry book contest and the graduate course English 242, Literary Editing and Publishing, taught by Prof. Mai Der Vang. This will include: database management, logging and assigning manuscripts, spreadsheet tracking and management, monitoring of student reviewer progress, helping to guide and organize the editorial process, instructing less-experienced students in working with Submittable, and assisting Prof. Vang and office staff with other aspects of running the contest.
